Readers, Reach and Community

A debate on whether to post webfiction to multiple sites/platforms promoted an interesting discussion about the difference between finding fans and building community, and what each author wants for their own work.

Webfiction: Your unpaid internship

NL Cobb shares her thoughts on why writing webfiction is like being an intern.

An internship is what you make of it. If there is nothing for you to do, don’t spend your time goofing off, ranting to friends about how little work you get to do and at the same time bemoaning the fact that you aren’t being paid enough. Take the initiative and take on more work. Posted chapter 1 of your web fiction? Start writing chapters 2 and 3, maybe even start outlining the rest of the series.

Are Apps The Future of Book Publishing?

From Forbes:

We’re at the dawn of the tablet era now. Earlier this month, Apple sold 3 million of its new iPad during the opening weekend, with some analysts expecting over 60 million of the tablets to be sold worldwide. What’s more, e-book readers are selling even more briskly than tablets. People are using those e-readers, too. On Amazon.com, books for its Kindle outsell its paper books.

UK's National Flash-Fiction Day

Mark your calenders! May 16 2012 is the inaugural National Flash-Fiction Day in the United Kingdom. And thanks to the joys of the Internet, anyone across the world can take part.

From the about page: “National Flash-Fiction Day is the brainchild of Calum Kerr, a confirmed writer of flash-fiction and advocate for the form. Finding himself in the middle of a project to write a new flash-fiction every day for a year (flash365) at the same time as National Poetry Day was happening, he went looking for a National Flash-fiction Day to get involved with. But… there wasn’t one.

Without further ado, he decided that it was up to him to create it, and what you find on the site is the result of this idea. The greater plan for the day is for writers and readers all over the country to arrange events for the day and to promote those tiny gems which we call flash-fiction.

If you are in a reading group or a writing group, maybe you’re a writer, a publisher, a teacher, or maybe you’re just interested in the whole idea: whatever it is, get involved! Whether it’s a reading event, a writing event, a slam, an anthology, a blog, or something no-one’s thought of yet, create your event, send us the details and we’ll list it so that other people can get involved.

Let’s make the 16th May 2012 the flashiest day in History!”

The experience of smell is the closest thing we have to intimate human contact without actually having it. A woman’s perfume. a whiff of cigarette smoke, a little bit of diesel fume, and some spearmint gum might come close to someone’s first kiss, for example. Of course, it’s impossible to create a first kiss without the human element, but for Jim Bronson, it’s the best he can do.

Webfiction brought to life in movies and TV dramas

China has always been ahead of the game when it comes to webfiction, and this article on China.org.cn offers great insight into their approach to webfiction.

Not only are online novels being transformed into movies and TV series, but there also seems to be more support and business models in place for online authors.

What do you think?

Weekly Webfiction Meme: The Serialists

The Serialists meme is a chance to check out some great online fiction. Each Wednesday author Alice Audrey creates a new post where people who write connected fiction can share their latest episodes.

Those who already participate in #TuesdaySerial will be very familiar with the format.

I believe that web fiction has yet to reach a critical mass. What web fiction series is truly a huge success? I know very few people who read it, and to be honest, I don’t read it much. I do most of my reading on a Kindle. So why should I expect droves of readers to be drawn to my writing? Perhaps it’s unrealistic
